GET RID OF ATTENTION GRABBERS
and do this instead!
Make an actual IMPACT ON STUDENT LEARNING!
It’s been a minute! I was locked out of my account for ages! Now Im back and all the wiser.
Today Im coming in with my opinion on attention grabbers.
Ya know, those call and response phrases all teachers use?! These can be heard in all classrooms and come in a million forms and called a million different things, but they are all the same.
- Attention grabbers
- Call and response
- Call it out
- Attention please
Unpopular opinion…Im not a fan! Some are really mindless, silly, and overall pointless.
Hear me out first…………………………….

I think to myself…how many times in a day, a year, a students lifetime do they respond to these? That blows my mind. What if we took it a step further and counted up the number of minutes in a day, a year, a students lifetime that these attention getters added up to? Shocked!
That is why I try to make the most of these precious minutes. After all, we are in an emergency state of Covid Catchup after learning loss. What if we used this time to get students attention, but there was a learning opportunity simultaneously?!
This is PART 1 of my series where I share more meaningful ways to get students attention. Don’t worry, my students loved these just as much as “Macaroni and cheese”…”everybody freeze” (of course there is still room for these too, just in moderation).
What if we used call and response phrases connected to learning in the area of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, Grammar, Vocabulary, Spelling, Social and Emotional Learning, Class expectations/rules?
Here are some to get your started:
MATH
Tune: Old Mcdonald had a farm
Teacher: ” 5 plus 4 equals”….. Student: “9” (freeze)
Teacher: ” What shape has 4 equal sides?”….. Student: “square” (freeze)
Teacher: ” five, ten, fifteen, next is?”….. Student: “twenty” (freeze)
STAY TUNED FOR MORE,
